What Spain says about a phone brand when nobody is asking
A global smartphone brand had doubled its online conversation in Spain in a year. Before the next launch, it needed to know how much of that growth was campaign noise and how much was real interest in its phones. This brand perception research read a full year of what people in Spain say online, unprompted.

01
The decision on the table
A global smartphone brand was building its presence in Spain, a market where most people already have a default phone brand and rarely question it. Its visibility grew fast: online mentions more than doubled in a year, pushed by campaigns with well-known faces on X.
Growth like that looks great in a monthly report. Before planning the next launch, the marketing team needed to know what it meant. Were people talking about the phones, or only about the famous faces selling them? And was anyone actually thinking about switching?
02
The questions
- What are people in Spain really saying about the brand, its phones and its campaigns?
- How much of the growth comes from campaign amplification, and how much from real interest in the products?
- Which product strengths break through, and in which conversations?
- Are people open to leaving their default brand, and what would make them switch?
- How is the brand perceived next to the two brands most people already own?
03
Why we designed it this way
Social listening is easy to do badly: count mentions, colour the sentiment, send a dashboard. Three choices kept this one honest.
Only earned conversation
The query filtered out false matches, other Spanish-speaking markets and the brand’s own posts. What was left is what people say when nobody pays them to.
Volume and depth, read apart
X brought the volume, and forums and Reddit brought the considered discussion. Reading them separately stopped the loudest channel from drowning out the most useful one.
A full year of conversation
Twelve months of conversation, compared with the year before, so every spike could be tied to a launch or a campaign.
04
Under the hood
For the insights team who want to check the rigour.
Scope
Spain, twelve months, every publicly accessible online platform except online news: X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, forums and blogs.
Query design
Product names, branded hashtags and category terms where the brand appears next to competitors. Geo, language and location signals to keep the conversation Spanish. Engagement with the brand’s account included, posts written by the brand excluded.
Volume analysis
Mentions, unique authors, year-on-year growth and the split by platform, with each spike matched to the launch or campaign behind it.
Qualitative reading
Threads read by our team, with forums and Reddit read in full. Themes coded across camera, battery, value, campaigns and switching.
How this case was built
This is a composite case. It draws on real social listening work in the smartphone category in Spain, with the brand, products, partners and competitors anonymised. The figures are real and rounded.
05
What we can tell you
Four patterns came out of a year of conversation. Any brand growing into a market with strong incumbents will recognise them.
Famous faces bring people in
The biggest spikes came from campaigns with well-known talent on X. The language was about looks, chemistry and events, much more than about phones. Those campaigns brought reach, and rarely brought the product with them.
The camera broke through with one clear message
When launches repeated a single, concrete camera claim, the product conversation followed. When the message was broad, it got lost.
People are ready to question their default
In forums, users talked openly about moving beyond the brands they have always had, and this brand kept appearing in recommendation threads.
Buyers compare what the camera does
People compared what the camera does in real use, feature by feature: zoom, portraits and natural-looking photos.
More than 20,000 mentions from about 3,500 authors, both more than double the year before. X carried the volume, driven by campaigns. The 7% on forums and Reddit is where people compared phones and talked about switching.

Recommendations for the next launch
What to keep, what to change and where to speak to people who are open to switching.
07
What happened next
The analysis pointed to three moves for the next launch. Keep the famous faces for reach, and give the product an active role once people arrive. Lead with specific camera proof instead of broad premium claims. And speak to people already open to switching, in the places where they compare phones.
One lens, for now
Social listening shows what people say when nobody asks them. The next layers would ask: interviews with people who switched or nearly did, to understand why, and a survey to measure how many are really considering the brand. That’s how a listening report grows into an H3™ brand tracker.
